FIRST PUMPER
Jamestown was incorporated in 1947, and one of the first objectives was creation of a fire department. But a water system and hydrants had to be installed.
In 1950, the town purchased an 1928 American LaFrance pumper from High Point for $500. Volunteers overhauled the vehicle. By November 1950, they were operational. [WS Journal, 11/4/50; News and Record, 9/10/94]
By August 1952, they had 20 volunteers, nearly $5,000 of equipment, and only own house in town that was more than 500 feet from a hydrant. Source: Greensboro Daily News, August 24, 1952.
In 1957, a remodeled gas station opened as a new town hall and a two-bay fire station. [Greensboro Record, 4/16/57]
1960s
NEW STATION, NEW APPARATUS
In 1966, a new town hall and fire station opened at Main Street and Guilford College-Jamestown Road. In later years, Guilford County EMS also shared the space, as did an office for the sheriff's department. [News and Record, 10/3/20]
In October 1967, a new American LaFrance 900 Series, 1000 GPM, open-cab pumper was delivered. It joined a 1960 Pirsch, 750 GPM pumper. [High Point Enterprise, 10/18/67]
2001
NEW FIRE STATION
In 2001, the fire department moved into its own building, built beside the town hall. The 7,520 square-foot building cost $949,000. It also had an office for the sheriff's department and quarters for a Guilford County EMS crew. [News and Record, 10/3/20]
In 2003, they merged with Pinecroft-Sedgefield FD, which had four fire stations, 23 full-time members, and about 52 volunteers. Pre-merger, JFD had 1 full-time and 4 part-time members, plus volunteers on call at night.
The merger followed the Apr. 30, 2003 retirement of Jamestown Fire Chief Larry Lain, who led the department for 20 years. Source: Greensboro News & Record, 19MAY03.
