OVERVIEW
This is a mid-level management position responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and directing daily operational activities of the department for an assigned shift. The Battalion Chief manages personnel and resources, fire prevention and training activities, implements fire department policies and guidelines, and coordinates emergency response activities for the protection of citizens and property from fire, medical, rescue, hazardous materials, and related emergencies.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
Manages departmental operations; assists command staff on personnel and other problem-solving roles; observes field performance and provides feedback.

Plan, organize, and direct daily manpower allocation to maintain required departmental strength and operational readiness.

Respond to emergencies, perform proper size-up, develop and implement incident action plans, and assume command according to department guidelines when appropriate.

Plans, organizes, schedules and directs departmental staff; participates in hiring and promotional processes; provides coaching and counseling to subordinate supervisors on personnel matters, internal investigations, and public interactions; ensures proper motivation, communications, training, teamwork, conflict resolution, performance excellence and staff readiness.

Quality assurance of incident reporting, departmental inventory and maintenance checks, and daily/weekly departmental assignments.

Use and maintain advanced knowledge of department computer programs and record management systems.

Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Eight (8) years fire service experience; with at least two (2) years of service as a Company Officer (or higher) with a Career Department

North Carolina / IFSAC Firefighter II Certification

North Carolina Emergency Technician Certification

North Carolina Driver Operator – Pumps

North Carolina Fire Officer I

North Carolina Fire & Life Safety Educator I

NFA Leadership in Supervision

Preferred Qualifications
